Thursday – 23rd September 2010 (PRE-CONFERENCE)

9:30 am to 5:00 pm – Pre-Conference Sessions:

(1) “The Team Visit” – by Margaret Alvarez – Accreditation Officer – Council of Schools (CIS) & Peter Mott, currently Associate Director of CAISA and Director of the Zurich International School – New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC)
(This workshop is designed for administrators, teachers, and school business managers who wish to be considered for membership of Visiting Teams for the first time, as well as for experienced visitors who wish to become familiar with the Seventh Edition of the accreditation guide).

(2) “The Common Ground Collaborative” – Putting our Shared Knowledge to Work by Kevin Bartlett, Director, The International School of Brussels
(Our common knowledge base about international education and the emergence of new technologies have combined to open up ways for networks of schools, organizations and individuals to develop and deliver learning to students, in ways that are both inspiring and ‘common sense’. This workshop provides details on an emerging global collaborative based on a new curriculum framework for students from all grades, supported by common agreements on pedagogy and assessment, all scaffolded by a range of coherent systems, documents and tools. The emphasis is on simplicity, coherence, and accessibility, including financial affordability. The style of the workshop is practical, open and conversational. Schools will have an early opportunity to signal their potential interest in learning more about this long-term collaboration, while, clearly, making no commitments).

(3) “Making Assessment Data Work for My School” by Barry Soraghan, Australian Council for Educational Research
(Teachers and schools can have access to a wide range of assessment data about their students. This presentation will focus on the interpretation and use of this data to more effectively inform teachers about improvements to their teaching programs and to assist schools in more strategic planning processes, in order to maximise student learning outcomes. The broad scope of the importance of this interpretation and use of data will be outlined, as well as the examination of an effective practical example using the ISA assessment data and reports. Participants will gain from this workshop a clearer understanding of how to more effectively use data to improve their teaching programs).

From 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm

(4) Council of International Schools US University Counseling Workshop by Jessica Ricker, Associate Director of Admission, Connecticut College and Luyen Phan, Associate Director of Intercultural & International Student Programs, Carleton College.
(For guidance counselors who advise students about their post-secondary education plans, with a specific focus on admission to US universities).
